MARK 11:23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. As a kid, I am one at heart even now, I had, with great expectations, literally spoken to “the mountains and the hills”, hoping these things would move. They didn’t.
Now I am in my late thirties, and physically I still haven’t moved a rock, leave alone a mountain. But in all these years, I have moved and shattered mountains of a different genre, the spiritual kind.
A “mountain” is a picture of hindrance in the same way a “sea” can be a picture of turbulence. And the only person to whom historical distinction for having slept through a storm can be given is Jesus. He literally slept! And with that made one of the profoundest exhibitions of faith. That it is possible to sleep-rest-in the midst of the greatest tragedies of our life if we know that God exists, and that He is in control. And so is the mountain, that you can smash it to smithereens by speaking to it. The Bible intentionally builds around these motifs to let us know about reality at two different levels.
A physical mountain is soil and rock, but a spiritual mountain is of a different nature; it is emotional: fearful, intimidating and sometimes demonic. A physical mountain can be conquered by physical strength, but a spiritual mountain (obstacle/hindrance) can be only conquered by spiritual strength, in fact if you lack spiritual drive you could be paralyzed looking at this one: for the bible says that If you faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small; your spiritual strength is small. And this is where chapter eleven and verse twenty-three in the book of Mark comes alive to the reader, that by faith in Jesus, and the faith of Jesus, we have the authority to SPEAK. That’s right, speak is all in capitals to drive the point that “speaking in faith” is the panacea to our problems. We have the authority in Jesus to speak faith filled words: to speak health, joy and life into our life and the lives of others. However, sometimes you may not see the results immediately. For many, the mountain in its place, standing mightily, despite their prayers, is a sign of a weak God, a God who is incapacitated. But that is far from the truth. Understanding God is understanding how reality is. Reality, as I understand and have mentioned earlier, has two levels to it: the lower level and the higher level.
This is what the bible says about “reality” at the higher level.
1) Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it. Colossians 2: 12-15.
The above verse categorically proclaims the victory of Jesus over everyone and everything. Nothing is excluded. And if we have the spirit of Christ (Romans 8:9),we are all of His. His victory is our victory, his righteousness is our righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21).
2) Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
3)The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. John 10:10
And it goes on and on, the higher level is a level in which everything has been subdued and defeated. It is a level in which we are more than conquerors. It is a level of abundance.
And then, there is reality at the lower level.
1) This is reality that you see all around. This is that level of reality that the newspapers and the television sets scream. This is that level which is full of filth, disease, deception, hatred and sadness.
The lower level is not virtual or “maya” as some might call it, but a distortion of the higher level. God is not the creator of this level, we are! However God, Jesus, was a partaker at this level. By partaking, He injected all of the filth at this level into him, and therefore sanitized it. The lower level is not to be dealt with an attitude that it doesn’t exist, one that of denial. But, it should be looked in the eye ,and brought captive.
Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; 2 Corinthians 10:5
Each one of you reading this has the ability to analyse these levels of realities. Know that if the Bible calls you a conqueror, “hupernikao” in the Greek, it explicitly is witnessing to the fact that you in Christ have the power to vanquish (to defeat completely) anyone or anything in a competition. Either the Bible is true or false, it has no shades of grey. Know that we are in a competition, know that the battle is over and also know that victory is yours for the asking by saying “yes” to Jesus today.
The Bible ain’t no book for those who dwell on myopic stuff, the “bruce-almighty” kind. It takes the far-sighted approach, far-sighted to the extent that it sometimes provides no gratification, leave alone instant gratification.
What it does, and sometimes mercilessly, to its readers is pruning of the most beautiful kind in the hands of a Master Gardener: God. He will treat you like a rose as he prunes away diseased and dead parts, and when the prunings complete you would be transformed in to the most beautiful flower that could’ve sprung from the womb of the Earth.
